You raised some interesting issues during our lunch meeting. You shared thoughts about racisim/the whaling industry/and other ideas. On this blog I would like some discussion points raised.
1. For students in Mrs. Gray's Whalers, write out a discussion topic with questions, and email it to me at nanthony@marblehead.com so that I can post it on the blog, and others can leave comments to your discussion topic.
2. When commenting on the discussion topics, always choose "other" for posting comments and use your first name and first letter of last name.
Here is a sample for discussion. You can comment on this and you can also create a new discussion topic that I will post.
Sample of a discussion point that YOU can email to me: The men who went to sea on board the Essex were experienced for the most part. Yet, when the boat was attacked, they stuck to the sea and did not try and locate nearby safety in a seaport. The men avoided possible places becausethey were frightened that they would be attacked by cannibals, for example. What are some examples in the book that show that these able seaman were perhaps naive or too frightened to seek safety? Why do you think that they were like that? They had navigation tools, didn't they? How does this add to the tragedy of this episode in history?

Test: Why didn't the crew get enough food onto their boats while the Essex was sinking.
testing 1, 2, 3 testing...
The way that they killed the whale was so gruesome!!! If I were there I would have fainted at the spot... It didn't really say how Nickerson reacted to his first, er, kill, did it?

I think that the fact that the men could have simply found land was amazing. Rather than landing they decided to stick around and sail against the wind because they were afraid of cannibalism. If i were them, i would have sailed to the islands and took my chances. If not that, i would have at least listened to the captain and gone with his plan and took my chances in the Society Islands. I think that sailing against the wind was a really bad idea and because of it most of the men died.
This is not a real comment, this is a test!!' I agree with Julia Z, I think the killing of the whales was sickening, and how the whales just began to spit up everything and blead everywhere. I am never becoming a whale poacher.
Hey y'all...testing...
Yeah, I agree with Julzi and Jason...the whale killing was brutal. I have a little sister who's a walking whale encyclopedia (along with all other marine life), so by default I picked up a few things from her. It's awful: they hunted many whales to or near to extinction.
And as to Susan's comment about what basically was their stupidity? Well, they did what they knew best to do. I mean, the times were different. They weren't extremely informed. Who's to say that you wouldn't've done what they did in that same time and situation?
An idea that I think I might want to do is either a coloring book with certain scenes and captions from the book. Another idea I might want to do is a picture book also with scenes and a scaled down (and shortened) version of the book.

I think for the project I will do models of each boat with the people in it. I also wonder what the whale was thinking when it rammed the boat!?
For my project I thought of making an ABC book. For each letter of the alphabet I would have a topic from the book. I would create a few paragraphs with a picture describing the topic.

I agree with Julia. The way that they killed the whales were horrible! Also with Peters comment, why didnt they get enough food for the boats? They had plenty of time if everyine chipped in to help.
That was just a test comment...
